The intelligent techniques are the most popular tools for damage identification in terms of high accuracy, reliable nature and the involvement of low cost. In this critical survey, a thorough analysis of various intelligent techniques is carried out considering the cases involved in civil structures. The importance and utilization of various intelligent tools to be mention as the concept of fuzzy logic, the technique of genetic algorithm, the methodology of neural network techniques, as well as the approaches of hybrid methods for the monitoring of the structural health of civil structures are illustrated in a sequential manner

    Chatter mitigation in milling process using discrete time sliding mode control with type 2-fuzzy logic system

    In order to achieve a high-quality machining process with superior productivity, it is very important to tackle the phenomenon of chatter in an effective manner. The problems like tool wear and improper surface finish affect the milling process and are caused by self-induced vibration termed as chatter. A strategy to control chatter vibration actively in the milling process is presented. The mathematical modeling of the process is carried out initially. In this paper, an innovative technique of discrete time sliding mode control (DSMC) is blended with the type-2 fuzzy logic system. The proposed active controller results in a significantly high mitigation of vibration. The DSMC is linked to the time-varying gain which is an innovative approach to mitigate chattering. The theorem is laid down which validates that the system states are bounded in the case of DSMC-type-2 fuzzy. Stability analysis is carried out using Lyapunov candidate. The nonlinearities linked with the cutting forces and damper friction are handled effectively by using the type-2 fuzzy logic system. The performance of the DSMC-type-2 fuzzy concept is compared with the discrete time PID (D-PID) and discrete time sliding mode control for validating the effectiveness of the controller. The better performance of DSMC-type-2 fuzzy over D-PID and DSMC-T1 fuzzy in the minimization of milling chatter are validated by a numerical analysis approach

    The implementation of image-based phenotyping systems has become an important aspect of crop and plant science research which has shown tremendous growth over the years. Accurate determination of features using images requires stable imaging and very precise processing. By installing a camera on a mechanical arm driven by motor, the maintenance of accuracy and stability becomes non-trivial. As per the state-of-the-art, the issue of external camera shake incurred due to vibration is a great concern in capturing accurate images, which may be induced by the driving motor of the manipulator. So, there is a requirement for a stable active controller for sufficient vibration attenuation of the manipulator. However, there are very few reports in agricultural practices which use control algorithms. Although, many control strategies have been utilized to control the vibration in manipulators associated to various applications, no control strategy with validated stability has been provided to control the vibration in such envisioned agricultural manipulator with simple low-cost hardware devices with the compensation of non-linearities. So, in this work, the combination of proportional-integral-differential (PID) control with type-2 fuzzy logic (T2-F-PID) is implemented for vibration control. The validation of the controller stability using Lyapunov analysis is established. A torsional actuator (TA) is applied for mitigating torsional vibration, which is a new contribution in the area of agricultural manipulators. Also, to prove the effectiveness of the controller, the vibration attenuation results with T2-F-PID is compared with conventional PD/PID controllers, and a type-1 fuzzy PID (T1-F-PID) controller

    A Multi-Center Comparison of VO2peak Trainability Between Interval Training and Moderate Intensity Continuous Training

    There is heterogeneity in the observed VO2peak response to similar exercise training, and different exercise approaches produce variable degrees of exercise response (trainability). The aim of this study was to combine data from different laboratories to compare VO2peak trainability between various volumes of interval training and Moderate Intensity Continuous Training (MICT). For interval training, volumes were classified by the duration of total interval time. High-volume High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) included studies that had participants complete more than 15 min of high intensity efforts per session. Low-volume HIIT/Sprint Interval Training (SIT) included studies using less than 15 min of high intensity efforts per session. In total, 677 participants across 18 aerobic exercise training interventions from eight different universities in five countries were included in the analysis. Participants had completed 3 weeks or more of either high-volume HIIT (n = 299), low-volume HIIT/SIT (n = 116), or MICT (n = 262) and were predominately men (n = 495) with a mix of healthy, elderly and clinical populations. Each training intervention improved mean VO2peak at the group level (P \u3c 0.001). After adjusting for covariates, high-volume HIIT had a significantly greater (P \u3c 0.05) absolute VO2peak increase (0.29 L/min) compared to MICT (0.20 L/min) and low-volume HIIT/SIT (0.18 L/min). Adjusted relative VO2peak increase was also significantly greater (P \u3c 0.01) in high-volume HIIT (3.3 ml/kg/min) than MICT (2.4 ml/kg/min) and insignificantly greater (P = 0.09) than low-volume HIIT/SIT (2.5 mL/kg/min). Based on a high threshold for a likely response (technical error of measurement plus the minimal clinically important difference), high-volume HIIT had significantly more (P \u3c 0.01) likely responders (31%) compared to low-volume HIIT/SIT (16%) and MICT (21%). Covariates such as age, sex, the individual study, population group, sessions per week, study duration and the average between pre and post VO2peak explained only 17.3% of the variance in VO2peak trainability. In conclusion, high-volume HIIT had more likely responders to improvements in VO2peak compared to low-volume HIIT/SIT and MICT

    A method for bidirectional active control of structures

Proportional-derivative (PD) and proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers are popular control algorithms in industrial applications, especially in structural vibration control. In this paper, the designs of two dampers, namely the horizontal actuator and torsional actuator, are combined for the lateral and torsional vibrations of the structure. The standard PD and PID controllers are utilized for active vibration control. The sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability of these controllers are validated by utilizing the Lyapunov stability theorem. An active vibration control system with two floors equipped with a horizontal actuator and a torsional actuator is installed to carry out the experimental analysis. The experimental results show that bidirectional active control has been achieved

    This book focuses on safeguarding civil structures and residents from natural hazards such as earthquakes through the use of active control. It proposes novel proportional-derivative (PD) and proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers, as well as discrete-time sliding mode controllers (DSMCs) for the vibration control of structures involving nonlinearities. Fuzzy logic techniques are used to compensate for nonlinearities.The first part of the book addresses modelling and feedback control in inelastic structures and presents a design for PD/PID controllers. In the second part, classical PD/PID and type-2 fuzzy control techniques are combined to compensate for uncertainties in the structures of buildings. The methodology for tuning the gains of PD/PID is obtained using Lyapunov stability theory, and the system’s stability is verified. Lastly, the book puts forward a DSMC design that does not require system parameters, allowing it to be more flexibly applied. All program codes used in the paper are presented in a MATLAB®/Simulink® environment.Given its scope, the book will be of interest to mechanical and civil engineers, and to advanced undergraduate and graduate engineering students in the areas of structural engineering, structural vibration, and advanced control

    Chatter is an obstacle for achieving high-quality machining process and high production rate in industries. Chatter is an unstable self-exciting phenomenon that leads to tool wear, poor surface finish, and downgrade the milling operations. A novel active control strategy to attenuate the chatter vibration is proposed. PD/PID controllers in combination with Type-2 Fuzzy logic were utilized as a control strategy. The main control actions were generated by PD/PID controllers, whereas the Type-2 Fuzzy logic system was used to compensate the involved nonlinearities. The Lyapunov stability analysis was utilized to validate the stability of Fuzzy PD/PID controllers. The theoretical concepts and results are proved using numerical simulations. Although PD/PID controllers have been used for chatter control in machining process, the importance of stability along with the implementation of Type-2 Fuzzy logic system for nonlinearity compensation was the main contribution. In addition, active control using an Active Vibration Damper placed in an effective position is entirely a new approach with promising practical results
